Vernazza, Cinque Terre

Vernazza, Cinque Terre

This is Vernazza, the second town from the west of the five towns that makes Cinque Terre. This is the town I was staying in on my visit to Cinque Terre. After being in the inland of Italy for almost two weeks it was really nice to get to the ocean. Like many of the other towns here it has a small harbour, is very colorful and is full of tourists. I am a bit biased since this was the town I was staying in, but it’s my favorite of the five. It’s beautiful, has a couple of restaurants and the possibility to take a dip in the ocean in the village. There’s a very small beach and some rocks and cliffs where you can swim from. After hiking between the villages it is nice to spend some hours by the cliff reading and dipping your feet in the ocean. That’s what I did.

I was really excited before I went to Cinque Terre and had to see what all the fuzz was about. And it is really beautiful, and I would recommend one going, but if it’s in the summer only for a short time. I can imagine it’s quite peaceful to stay here in the spring with less tourists and better hiking weather. In the two following posts I will tell you my thoughts about the two hikes I did and show you my pictures. But here’s Vernazza!

On the hill in Vernazza is the Belforte tower. From here you get a view over the village, the surrounding hills, the ocean and also to the neighbouring cities of Corniglia and Monterosso.

To get the beautiful view over the whole village you have to walk a small part of the hiking trail. The hiking trails are inside the national park which you have to pay an entrance fee to visit.

The following view over Vernazza you get from the beginning of the hike from Vernazza to Corniglia.

I spent three nights in Vernazza. Two of the nights I ate at restaurants, pizza and pasta. But honestly, nothing special. The best meal (in the whole week) was when I bought four pieces of bread with toppings of shrimp, tomato and ham and sat down by the water. They were really good and I really enjoyed sitting there watching the sunset. Picture of the food in one of the following pictures.

And some night time shots. It was hard to get good photos here, but I think the last one actually turned out pretty good!
